SportDOG Brand In-Ground Fence System

The SportDOG Brand In-Ground Fence System is one of the best dog fences that is installed in-ground. It creates radio signals from the transmitter to the boundary wire that is close the enclosure to the dog’s fence. You can quickly increase the coverage of the fence by adding more receptor flags. With its material being weatherproofed, your dog can spend its day outside without having to worry about the elements damaging the electronic collar.

SportDOG Brand In-Ground Fence System

We have reviewed a number of different dog fence systems and the SportDOG Brand SDF-100A In-Ground Fence System is our top pick.

To use the SportDOG Fence System, you’ll bury a wire around the perimeter of the area you would like to keep your dog confined to. The system produces a radio frequency from the fence transmitter, through the boundary wire.

Your dog will wear a collar that is also a radio receiver with contact points that touch his or her neck. There is a warning zone that will give a warning beep when the dog gets too close to the perimeter line. If your dog continues into the “stimulation zone” a safe stimulation will get your dog’s attention and encourage them to return to the boundary area.

The SportDOG In-Ground Fence System has four different levels of static stimulation so it can be adjusted based on your dog’s temperament. The system can cover up to 1 1/3 acre with the included boundary wire, but is also expandable up to 100 acres if you purchase additional wire.

The system is also expandable if you have multiple dogs, you’ll be able to purchase additional collars.

The SportDOG Brand SDF-100A System is getting great reviews from customers online. When researching this invisible dog fence, we found over 500 reviews online and it received an average rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

How Does An Underground Dog Fence Work?

An underground dog fence is also known as a wired or in-ground fence and it’s an excellent way to keep your dog safe and secure in your yard. If you’re in the market for this type of electric dog fence, understanding how it functions is a good starting point so have a look at the diagram below while I give you a quick explanation.

You’ll either bury your wire or leave it above ground surrounding whatever area you want to contain your dog in. The transmitter you’ve mounted (usually inside your home or garage) sends out a signal that radiates off the wire and creates your hidden boundary.

Your dog wears a special receiver collar that reacts to the signal coming off the wire. As long as they stay within the Safe Zone they’re free to run around and play without receiving any kind of correction.

But if they wander into the Correction Zone their collar beeps, warning them it’s time to turn around.

If they ignore the beep and continue to move toward the wire the metal contact points on their collar deliver a startling but safe static correction which won’t hurt them but definitely reminds them that they’re somewhere they’re not supposed to be!

This electric stimulation is designed to encourage them to retreat back to the Safe Zone of the yard. The twisted wire represents ‘dead zones’ and those are areas your dog can freely cross without getting any type of correction.

This diagram shows the most common layout for a wired dog fence: a single loop around your entire property. With this configuration not only can you keep your dog safely inside whatever perimeter you set up, you can also create exclusion zones by burying the wire around areas you want to keep your dog out of such as a pool or garden.

Although installing an in-ground dog fence takes some time and effort, there are a couple of things that people love about them:

  • question-circle
You can completely customize the size and shape of your containment area.
  • question-circle
You can install the wire in any type of terrain – beneath rocks, under water, through heavily wooded areas – you can literally go ‘under the river and through the woods’.

Best Underground Dog Fence Tips: The Don'ts of Electronic Fence Systems

It is important for the dog owner to be fully aware of all the things not to do when using an electronic fence system. Knowing these don'ts ensures optimal satisfaction for both the owner and his or her dog.

Don't Use a Fence With Certain Types of Dogs

It is important to consult a veterinarian before using an electronic fence, but as a general rule of thumb, it is not recommended to use this type of system for guard dogs, vicious dogs, or dogs with health problems. Guard dogs, by their very nature, should not be contained in an electronic fence because their instincts are to protect their home at whatever cost, and they try to leave the boundary if they feel the need to protect their territory.

The static correction can aggravate vicious dogs, so it is not a good idea to use this type of containment. The fence can harm dogs with health problems, such as heart conditions, because although the correction is mild, it can be jolting.

Don't Run Wire Along Other Wires

If the owner is installing the system, he or she needs to make sure not to run the ground wires along electrical, telephone, or antenna wires to prevent electrical hazards and service interruption. Similarly, the wires should not be run along television cables or near satellite dishes.

It is best to check with utility companies if the owner is unsure of where power lines are located so the fence wires do not cross power lines.

Don't Put the Transmitter Outdoors

If the rechargeable in-ground invisible fencing system is on a property with many acres, the transmitter should not be placed in a shed or barn where it may get wet. The best place to put the transmitter is indoors in a dry and protected area.

Professional installers can choose the best possible location for the transmitter and can ground it so a malfunction does not occur during power loss or surges. If the owner is installing the electronic fence system, DIY kits include instructions on how to ground the transmitter properly.

It is important to not skip this step to prevent damage to the electronic fence system.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Wireless Dog Fence or In-Ground Dog Fence

Both wireless and in-ground fences are an excellent way to keep your dog safely contained but which one is right for you depends on your situation.

Wireless fences are easy to setup and maintain but they only offer a circular shaped boundary. In-ground dog fences take more time and effort to install but they can be completely customized to perfectly fit the size and shape of your yard.
